Adjacent Segment Disease (ASD): A Physical Therapy Perspective

Description: As Physical Therapists, we evaluate and treat both dysfunctions and symptoms daily. Our best practice is prevention, differential diagnosis of the dysfunction, and contributing factors to the compensation and symptoms. One of the most relevant findings is how hypomobile/ stiff area can lead to an adjacent hypermobile joint with corresponding adjacent segment/region compensation. During this presentation, Dr. Ghandour will define and describe the progression of adjacent segment disease and its impact on functional mobility and symptomology. Additionally, he will discuss the progression of instability, the impact of selected lumbar surgical procedures (PLIF and XLIF) on musculature anatomy and activation. Fundamental treatment discussion and progressive strategies from non-weight bearing, modified weight-bearing and functional stabilization, and return to activities of daily living and sports, will be demonstrated.
